The New Zion Church has a rich history dating back to June 1869 when it was established by the late Rev. Emanuel. The church building was erected at its current location in 1874, and it was during this time that services began with Rev. Cunnigen serving as its first pastor. This marked the beginning of a long and storied tradition of worship and community service at the New Zion Baptist Church.
Over time, the church experienced spiritual growth, financial prosperity, and an increase in membership.
Reverend Edgar Lewis was elected as the church pastor in August 1992. He faithfully served the congregation until his passing on March 5, 2022. As pastor, he profoundly impacted the community and led the congregation with dedication and compassion. Today, New Zion Church is led by Pastor Yvonne Lewis, the late Reverend Edgar Lewis’ widow and also the former co-pastor.
The New Zion Bible Institute Mississippi was established in 2003 within the New Zion Church community. The institute saw over 60 individuals successfully graduate from its programs, equipping them for a lifetime of service and ministry. Unfortunately, the New Zion Bible Institute closed its doors in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Renovation construction began on the church in January 2007 and was completed in February 2009. In 2010, the church’s life center and multi-purpose complex were named and dedicated in honor of two longstanding members, Trista D. Martain and Mrs. Mary B. Marks, to recognize their commitment and service to the community and New Zion Church.
New Zion Church is committed to spreading the love and message of Jesus Christ beyond our local community. We are proud to support the work of two dedicated missionaries, Janice Lewis and Frazier Mathis. Through our prayers and financial support, New Zion Church is honored to be a part of the life-changing work of Missionaries Lewis and Mathis as they fulfill their calling to make disciples of all nations.
In August 2024, New Zion Church was officially recognized by the American Red Cross as a designated disaster shelter, providing a safe and secure location for individuals and families in need during times of crisis.

At New Zion Church, our beliefs are rooted in the timeless truths of the Bible, guiding us in faith, practice, and community. We are a Christ-centered congregation that celebrates God's love, grace, and transformative power in our lives.
God
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all things, sovereign over all, and deeply involved in our lives.
Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, who came to earth to save us. Through His death, resurrection, and ascension, we are offered forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit lives within every believer, guiding, empowering, and equipping us for godly living and service. He is our comforter, teacher, and source of spiritual gifts.
The Bible
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, without error in its teachings. It serves as our ultimate authority in matters of faith, conduct, and guidance for daily life.
Salvation
We believe that salvation is a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not earned by our efforts but granted by God's grace, ensuring a restored relationship with Him.
The Church
We believe in the importance of the church as the body of Christ, called to love one another, worship together, and serve our community. We are committed to being a welcoming place where all can grow in faith.
Baptism and Communion
We practice baptism and communion as expressions of our faith and obedience to Christ. Baptism symbolizes our new life in Christ, and communion remembers His sacrifice for us.
Faith
We believe in the power of faith as the cornerstone of our relationship with God. Our faith is rooted in the Bible, which we hold as the inspired Word of God.
Discipleship
We believe that every believer is called to grow in their faith and to help others do the same. Our discipleship path includes: 1) Bible Studies and Small Groups; 2) Mentorship and Spiritual Guidance; 3) Serving Others; and 4) Equipping Leaders.
